I’m Worried By Our Lack of Reaction to Fascism
I’m not just writing this to stoke the flames of fear, I am deeply, genuinely disturbed by what I’m seeing, and the lack of response from pretty much anyone but a few citizens, who are being derided as radicals and terrorists. I do feel that I should issue a content warning, as I will be linking to and showing disturbing images and videos.
Obviously, Trump is a big part of this problem, but I won’t be talking much about him specifically here, because there are deeper issues to consider, and getting rid of Trump alone won’t fix the problem. For one thing, there are others like him waiting for their turn, but evidence also suggests that Biden won’t be the savior some make him out to be. Not only is he problematic enough on his own, but he and the Democrats in general seem to be “resisting” fascism about as well as they have Trump himself, which is to say, not at all. The response from Biden’s supporters is equally lackluster. While fascists chase down and beat people in broad daylight, they tell us to vote.
Perhaps most disturbing is the straight-up support that police are showing to fascist groups such as the Proud Boys, and the lack of coverage that this particular detail is getting in corporate media, even when they do cover police violence. This support from the cops should come as no surprise, as even the FBI has been sounding the alarm about links between white supremacist groups and law enforcement. There have been recent reports from several cities, including Kenosha and Denver, of police coordinating with or otherwise providing aid to armed far-right extremists, and there seems to be nothing being done about it.
Even when they aren’t actively coordinating, compare the violence police have used against BLM and other nominally left-aligned protesters with how they respond to those on the right. There are, unfortunately, many examples we could choose from, but here are two from just the past week or so:
…as opposed to:
There are a number of other alarming reports as well, such as the police chief defending the Kenosha shooter, execution gangs in the LA County Sheriffs, detainees going missing from ICE facilities, and the recent torture and killing of a Black man by NYC cops. These are just a few things that I’m only picking out for their specific connections, amidst a backdrop of police violence that was spurred on by protests against police violence, specifically the police killing of another Black person, George Floyd, by police. They don’t seem willing to stop themselves since then, either. Whether or not any of the individual cops involved are fascists seems irrelevant.
Likewise with the abduction of citizens by unmarked federal police. Maybe the cops are actual fascists, maybe they’re just following orders, but what’s really the difference? It isn’t just happening in Portland, either. A DSA co-chair from Washington was similarly arrested without charges and questioned, in an act which seemed to be “politically motivated.”
While this is happening, Joe Biden releases an ad condemning “radical socialism.” We’re supposed to believe that he’s the solution to fascism, but the statements in that ad, and his history in general, really make me doubt that. Let’s also not forget that the prosecution of whistleblowers such as Snowden, Assange, and Manning didn’t begin with Trump, and Biden was among the officials working to block asylum for Snowden.
This leads to another reason that we can’t trust the election to save us. Even if Biden wasn’t so problematic himself, and even if we could trust Trump to peacefully step down if he loses, unelected officials like Mike Pompeo and William Barr tend to just slither into some other position of power behind the scenes.
The question, then, is what do we do? For starters:
